Home to our global Research, Design and Development centre and all of our Commercial functions, Dyson HQ is tucked away in countryside famous for the railway tunnels and bridges of Isambard Brunel, who revolutionised modern engineering. Our secluded location helps us to protect our ideas and stay independent-minded. Yet nearby are the fashionable cities of Bristol and Bath (where a young James Dyson invented cyclone technology).

Function Overview

Dyson learnt an early lesson in the value of legal might, winning a gruelling battle against Hoover when it infringed our early cyclone technology patents. Our in-house legal teams have been at the forefront of Dyson ever since. From the information security experts and IP teams doggedly protecting our ideas. To the commercial lawyers and procurement specialists who solve our toughest business challenges across the world. 


  • Providing support on commercial contract issues across the business, with a particular emphasis on procurement

  • Drafting and negotiating contracts with suppliers and customers

  • Supporting tender processes across the business, particularly in IT and on capital equipment projects

  • Providing input into contract control processes sand reviewing and maintaining precedent documents

  • Handling contract disputes with third parties.


  • The successful candidate must have post qualification experience in a commercial role. In-house exposure during or post training is a definite advantage.
  • A solid background in commercial law and an ability to apply that knowledge in a practical and pragmatic way.

  • Strong drafting skills and extensive experience of contract negotiation.

  • Awareness of the role of the legal function in a large business and have the ability to contribute actively in the taking of key business decisions.

  • An appetite to learn new skills and the versatility and technical ability to deal with issues outside of their experience and learn quickly on the job.

  • Able to work with a minimum level of supervision in a fast paced, constantly changing but supportive environment.

  • Experience or interest in design and engineering and an aptitude to learn to understand technical discussions.

  • Confidence and gravitas to challenge decisions and actions when required.

  • A skilled communicator, capable of interacting with the business at all levels (including the Executive Team), to build effective relationships and earn credibility across the business.
