Aero-Thermal Engineer




The engineer will work within the Research Team to apply their skills and experience in Fluid Dynamics and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to invent new products. Collaborating within multi-disciplinary teams they will produce the innovation behind the next generation of Dyson products. The engineer will gain an insight into the product challenges and apply the latest developments in aerodynamics and thermodynamics to identify solutions. Potential solutions will be investigated and evaluated using a variety of cutting-edge techniques, including: experimental, computational and analytical methods. In addition to their fluid dynamic expertise the candidate will have a good appreciation for the wider aspects of the technology and its application to a range of products. The integrated multidisciplinary approach to product development within the Research Team fosters a vibrant learning environment and provides a unique opportunity to develop as an engineer.

Home to our global Research, Design and Development centre and all of our Commercial functions, Dyson HQ is tucked away in countryside famous for the railway tunnels and bridges of Isambard Brunel, who revolutionised modern engineering. Our secluded location helps us to protect our ideas and stay independent-minded. Yet nearby are the fashionable cities of Bristol and Bath (where a young James Dyson invented cyclone technology). Deliver product focused technology projects to the Dyson range plan.

◾Generate innovative concepts for new technologies.

◾Conduct detailed theoretical analysis of these technologies using a variety of methods including: Experiments, CFD and low order/empirical modelling techniques.

◾ Analyse results, summarise findings and communicate these to other members of the Research Team including senior managers and directors.

◾Liaise with development teams to ensure effective transfer of technology into the future product range.

◾Identify potential research areas which would benefit from new technology development.

◾Present concepts to James Dyson and the Exec. Team, when required.


Degree ideally in aerodynamics and thermodynamics or related area such as physics or applied math

◾A good understanding of the principles and application of CFD, with previous experience of ANSYS-Fluent and/or ANSYS-CFX beneficial

◾Good understanding of experimental techniques, particularly with regard to pressure, temperature and flow measurement

◾Fundamental knowledge of fluid dynamics and thermodynamics

◾Ability to communicate appropriate, concise and accurate information in written and verbal format

◾Good time management and organisational skills

◾Self-motivated and driven to succeed

◾Experience performing industrial CFD on larger systems, preferably with experience of ANSYS. ◾Programming experience, preferably including Matlab

◾Experience of porous media, multiphase flow or fluid structure interaction
