Aerodynamics Research Engineer

Competitive + bonus + pension + 27 days holiday

Malmesbury

Description

The Aerodynamics Research Engineer will support the Motors Department in the evolution of new and existing products, specifically taking a leading role in the areas of experimental aerodynamics and aero-acoustics. The Motors Aerodynamics research Engineer will be expected to take proactive approach in identifying and evaluating new motor technology opportunities across a wide spectrum of areas including turbo machinery aerodynamics, together with developing new tools, and methods with the aim of enhancing the performance, reliability and time to market of Dyson products.

Market Overview

Home to our global Research, Design and Development centre and all of our Commercial functions, Dyson HQ is tucked away in countryside famous for the railway tunnels and bridges of Isambard Brunel, who revolutionised modern engineering. Our secluded location helps us to protect our ideas and stay independent-minded. Yet nearby are the fashionable cities of Bristol and Bath (where a young James Dyson invented cyclone technology). The building is the heartbeat of Dyson. Over 2,000 people, including James himself, spend their days strategising, inventing technology and telling the Dyson story to the world. From 2016, our HQ will begin doubling its footprint with an ambitious new expansion.

Function Overview

It takes real ingenuity to find new ways of doing things. Smarter technologies. Lighter, stronger materials. And quieter, cleaner power systems. Our Research & Science teams – scientists, mechanical engineers and specialists across each product category – are the experimenters and risk-takers behind Dyson problem-solving. Whether it’s in-house development, sourcing outside technology partners, or driving collaboration with partner universities, they lead the way in finding the next generation of Dyson technology. Which is why any one of them can find themselves presenting to James Dyson himself.

Accountabilities

  • Develop new designs in the discipline of turbo machinery and aerodynamics and investigate potential new enabling technology utilising a variety of experimental and numerical thermo fluid analysis/ simulation platforms
  • Design and optimise both the preliminary and the detailed stages of new motor aerodynamic systems with particular focus on system integration opportunities
  • Develop and champion accurate, in depth, experimental techniques both within the research team and the wider Motors group
  • Analyse test results, summarise findings and communicate to other members of RDD including senior managers and directors.
  • Liaise with development teams to ensure effective transfer of technology into future product range.
  • Mentoring of design engineers in best practise in the area of fluid dynamics, particularly compressor and turbine design along with fluid flow in our extensive range of floor care and new products.

Skills

Technical

  • A good first degree or higher in Aeronautical or Mechanical Engineering (other relevant engineering disciplines will be considered).
  •  An excellent working knowledge of fundamental thermodynamics and fluid dynamics.
  • Experience of numerical turbo machinery design/ analysis design tools would be a distinct advantage {Concepts NREC; Numeca; Fluent; Ansys etc.}
  • Expertise with experimental measurements, particularly with regard to pressure, temperature and flow measurement, demonstrating both the ability to conduct and lead a complete well thought out experimental investigation.
  • Experience in mentoring fellow engineers in the best practise of experimentation would be a clear advantage. • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.

Behavioural

  • The ability to take the lead position within the team on a given area with little direction, whilst maintaining a collaborative, mentoring position with fellow team members
  • Good analytical ability and attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate appropriate, concise and accurate information in written and verbal format.
  • Ability to adapt or generate imaginative and innovative ideas, in line with core Dyson values.
  • To be able to multi-task and plan effectively when working with a variety of project teams in an often high-pressure, competitive environment.
  • Excellent team-working skills

Benefits Overview

Dyson monitors the market to ensure competitive salaries and pension contributions. Beyond that, you’ll also enjoy a profit-related bonus, generous leave and life insurance. But financial benefits are only the start of a Dyson career. Rapid professional growth, leadership development and new opportunities abound, driven by regular reviews and dynamic workshops. And with a vibrant culture, flexible working hours, the latest devices and a relaxed dress code reflecting our engineering spirit, it’s an exciting team environment geared to creativity, innovation and ambition.
