Component Sourcing Engineer

Dyson develops and manufactures complex electronics products; as their diversity increases, so the out-sourcing requirement for electronics modules and assemblies has also grown in terms of complexity, technology diversity and quantity. Managing this activity is challenging and we need a Component Sourcing Engineer who is equally motivated and talented to help drive success in what is a critical department within RDD.

Market Overview

In 2000, Dyson moved production from Malmesbury to Malaysia to be closer to our supply chains and open up international growth. The small team of 10 has now grown to almost 1,200 – forming Dyson’s second biggest global hub. Located in the exhilarating industrial heart of Johor, it’s also home to RDD, IT, operations,  finance, creative and HR.

The RDD facility is central to our plans to launch 100 new machines in the next four years. To meet these ambitions, we recently expanded the site to 30,000m², with 50 advanced technology labs and 700 new engineers. In the Dyson world, there’s no more exciting place to be.

Reporting to the SEA Electronics Manager, the successful candidate will become part of a busy team working for Electronics within Research Design and Development (RDD), helping to manage the electronic modules and parts sourcing activity; from requirements through to sourcing and selection. As our product diversity and technology roadmaps expand, so will the scope for this activity; requiring smarter solutions across a broader technology platform.

It’s a demanding role and the ideal candidate will ideally be an experienced Component Engineer, with a proven track record in regard to electronics module requirement capture, specification generation, sourcing & selection. Typical experience should include PSU’s, Chargers and ALCI’s.


You should have a methodical and consistent approach, and be able to self-manage and motivate; managing your own time in order to undertake a variety of related activities.  Dyson engineers are many things; you must be able to provide solutions where you identify problems, be pro-active, and be a technical resource for others. You must be innovative, enjoy being challenged, adapt to change, function within a team, but also work independently as required.

  • Manage new part/assembly/module sourcing activity, including; requirements capture, sourcing and selection, qualification, validation and country compliance.

  • Work closely with different RDD engineering teams, to generate the modules outsourcing requirements

  • Help lead the outsourcing activity for RDD engineering teams during in the early product design milestone.

  • Ensure close and consistent working interaction with procurement team is always maintained

  • Work with New Product Development (NPD) teams to ensure the integrity and clarity of engineering drawing requirements, ensuring that all expectations are communicated effectively to supporting suppliers.

  • Interact with NPD teams to ensure suppliers are involved in development and review of specifications to promote design for manufacturability.

  • Work closely with supplier, electronics engineer and approval team to make sure part/assembly sourced is compliant with required compliance certification.

  • Undertake part/assembly failure analysis, promoting cross-functional team approach with electronics engineers

  • Work closely with quality and reliability team, to capture quality/reliability issues and generate robust solutions

  • Familiarity with electronics component industry and generate good working relationships with part manufacturer representatives.

  • Support a number of associated activities as a technical resource or SME, such as:

    • Developing the required jig or fixture for part/assembly evaluation test.

    • Part/assembly Evaluation ( including stress and robustness testing)

    • Supplier audit during supplier qualification

  • Responsible for managing part/assembly/module EOL issues.

  • Manage alternative part for single source part/assembly/module.



  • BEng degree in Electronic/Electrical/Communication Engineering, with a demonstrable level of industrial experience in a relevant industry

Skills & experience.

  • Knowledge and experience in Electronics Engineering, specialising in electronics component industry

  • Demonstrable and proven track record of working experience in the related field.

  • Strong understanding on various electronics component functions and specifications

  • Working Knowledge of electronics solution design and development process.

  • Capable to deliver high quality results within tight time deadlines.

  • Understanding of Product Life Management (PLM) systems

  • Fluent in spoken and written English
