Description and Requirements

We’re looking for an incredible User Experience designer to join our Human Machine Interface (HMI) team. 

Human Machine Interface: confusing name, but simple concept. Our team makes Dyson products easier for our users to interact with. The team works across all of Dyson’s products ensuring that user experiences are simple, intuitive and delightful. 

As one of the designers on the team you’ll be defining the user experience of our products. You’ll take a user-centered design approach based around talking to users and working with user data. You’ll also be expected to use your design intuition to make certain decisions, through thinking differently you’ll be able to craft beautiful experiences that haven’t previously been produced.

Market Overview:

Dyson HQ is home to over 3,500 people who work across a medley of engineering and commercial functions. The award-winning campus has three cafes, a sports centre and a number of engineering icons including our Harrier and Lightning jets – one of which hangs from the ceiling of our café. Based in Malmesbury, the campus is within easy reach of both the Cotswolds and cities like Bath and Bristol along the M4 corridor.

Function Overview:

This team is part of Design and Product Experience/Design, User Interface and User Experience, responsible for innovation and direction within Dyson's products. The team comprises of four different areas (Connected Product Features, UX/UI, Technology and Commercial), which work collaboratively to deliver a seamless user experience.


  • You will have a direct contribution to Dyson's products and will design the product’s user experience.
  • You will design the experience, behaviours, control and feedback mechanisms for our products taking an empathetic user-centred approach to problem solving. 
  • You will generate ideas that are both product enhancing and innovative. No gimmicks. 
  • With the rest of the Design and Product Experience teams you’ll create a seamless product experience. 
  • Through prototyping and demonstration, you will bring your ideas and designs to life through storyboarding, sketching, illustration, interactive demo’s and physical prototype rigs. 
  • You’ll work closely with our hardware and software engineers to create high fidelity prototypes to ensure product behaviours are clearly understood. 
  • You will conduct user trial options when needed to make a decision or validate a design. You’ll be able to utilise Dyson hubs in Chicago, Tokyo, Shanghai and Singapore to test concepts and gain new insights. 
  • Your role will be to make abstract thoughts concrete and communicate them in many different formats from working prototypes to user stories and everything in between. 
  • You will be presenting designs to senior stakeholders including James Dyson and Jake Dyson. 
  • Aside from the day job, you’ll often have opportunities to represent Dyson engineering in press, conferences and at new product launches. The exposure you will witness of the broader team’s involvement in a given product’s development means you will be well placed to support such events if of interest.


  • Interaction design, user-experience design, communication design experience and/ or degree
  • Prototyping experience (e.g. paper prototypes, InVision, Framer, in-browser design etc.) 
  • Developing design and discovery processes 
  • Experience of leading discovery workshops 
  • Information architecture or content modelling experience 
  • User research (both running research and reporting research) 
  • Working with developers (or developing software yourself) 
  • Experience of software development processes (e.g. version control, Kanban/Scrum etc.) would be a benefit 
  • Confident presenting to senior stakeholders 
  • Curiosity and a willingness to continually learn new concepts and ideas
