This role sits within the Interiors team of our Automotive function.

Market Overview:

As part of the £2.5 billion investment, Dyson acquired a 517 acre plot in Hullavington. This former Royal Air Force base, just five miles from Dyson HQ, will increase our UK footprint tenfold. We’ll be turning old hangars into futuristic labs and workspaces – creating a campus to rival those in Silicon Valley.

Function Overview:

We’ve begun work on a battery electric vehicle – that’s no secret. It has remained our ambition to solve the worldwide problem of air pollution for nearly 30 years. Now that we have the ability to bring all our technologies together into a single product, we’re able to solve this problem at the source.

For now, it’s all about finding the right people to make it all happen for 2020

Accountabilities:

  • Apply innovative problem solving skills to support the vision specification for new product concepts.
  • Participate and lead brainstorms and gather research to support new product concepts.
  • Champion great design to produce products that meet all performance and functional criteria.
  • Work with research teams to integrate and develop new technology research into the final design.
  • Take an active, hands-on role to ensure that all engineering problems are resolved thoroughly.
  • Use established Dyson development processes, good engineering practice and discipline to deliver robust design solutions in agreed timeframe.
  • Communicate between all teams within RDD and Global Operations to ensure effective and timely input.
  • Prepare for (and participate in when required) design reviews with Design Managers and Concept Design Director.
  • Design reviews with James Dyson and/or Executive, as required.
  • Commercial support for ensuring engineering performance meets business aspirations.

Skills:

  • A degree in a relevant engineering or science discipline or equivalent.
  • Previous relevant experience of product design or mechanical engineering with a focus on Acoustic Engineering and Audio system development.
  • Automotive engineering experience with PMST ownership knowledge preferable.
  • Proven track record of managing resource and delivering to time scales.
  • Sound understanding and knowledge of basic physical principles, acoustics and electronics.
  • Knowledge and understanding of injection moulding and manufacturing.
  • Management of technical specification.
  • Audio performance target setting experience.
  • Experience in managing Tier 1 suppliers.
  • BOM management experience.
  • A creative and considered approach to problem solving, adhering to clear design processes.
  • Proven ability to communicate through 2 and 3 dimensional media, e.g. sketching, CAD, model making.
  • A good balance of practical and theoretical skills; calculations from first principles; prototype rig building and establishing test methods to analyse the design.
  • Technical and personal credibility to work effectively with other teams in RDD.
  • Ability to plan ahead, prioritise tasks and coordinate with the work of others.
  • Excellent communication, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Self-starter - ability to work independently.
  • Experience with CAD modelling – (NX, ANSYS, COMSOL preferred)
  • Ability to set and communicate clear team and project goals.
  • Team management experience working with cross functional support teams.
  • Analytical listening capability ideal, interest in Audio.
  • Good hearing ability critical.
  • Commercial experience for business strategy management.
