EMC Test Engineer




This department is responsible to ensure that all Dyson products are in compliance with all relevant Safety, Materials and EMC regulations, standards and legislations. These include testing and certification based on commonly adopted international regulation and standards (IEC/UL Standards and etc.) as well as country/region specific legislations (CE/EU directives, DENAN, REACH, RoHS, Prop65 and etc.). We monitor and guide design engineers to ensure that all Dyson products are safe and we liaise with the relevant authority in every country we market our products, providing them with all certificates and other requisites to allow sales in that particular country. We work closely with TUV, Intertek, SGS and other independent and accredited test service providers.

Market Overview

In 2000, Dyson moved production from Malmesbury to Malaysia to be closer to our supply chains and open up international growth. The small team of 10 has now grown to almost 1,200 – forming Dyson’s second biggest global hub. Located in the exhilarating industrial heart of Johor, it’s also home to RDD, IT, operations,  finance, creative and HR.

The RDD facility is central to our plans to launch 100 new machines in the next four years. To meet these ambitions, we recently expanded the site to 30,000m², with 50 advanced technology labs and 700 new engineers. In the Dyson world, there’s no more exciting place to be.

Function Overview

For a Dyson engineer, breaking the rules is part of the job. It’s what makes Dyson machines different. But the next great Dyson idea can’t change the world from a lab. To ensure our machines can be sold, there are some rules we need to stick to. From reviewing initial concepts to testing final components in our accredited test laboratories, our Compliance and Approvals team is a critical voice during the design phase. By making sure Dyson machines are never kept off the shelf by global standards and legislation, they play vital role in supporting Dyson’s growth.


  • To work in the Dyson Compliance Team reporting to the Compliance Manager and Senior EMC engineer
  • To work with Dyson design teams to ensure the projects fulfil the applicable EMC technical standards and legislation requirements within the specified timeline
  • Carry out EMC testing of Dyson products against the relevant worldwide EMC standards (emissions and immunity)
  • Operate a full compliant EMC test facility
  • Be able to carry out EMC testing in accordance with CISPR, IEC, EN and other relevant worldwide EMC standards
  • Maintain the EMC Lab in accordance with the requirements of EN17025
  • Perform EMC testing according to the plan prepared by the Senior EMC Engineer
  • Source the testing samples and relevant information from the project teams
  • Advise the project teams on EMC test requirements and interpretations to ensure the expectations of both parts are met
  • Produce formal EMC reports in the agreed format and according to the Compliance Team practices


  • Degree or equivalent experience in electrical/electronic discipline

  • Experience of working in an EMC test laboratory

  • Experience of using EMC laboratory test equipment

  • Experience of working in a regulatory compliance environment, preferably associated with a high volume manufacturing

  • At least 2 years’ experience on a broad range of EMC duties

  • Good analytical / problem solving skills

  • Good practical ‘hands-on’ working skills

  • Be able to handle a broad and complex workload

  • A detailed and methodical approach to test plans

  • Have good organisational and record keeping skills

  • Demonstrate confident and persuasive communication skills
