Dyson offers a unique opportunity for an Electronics Technician in the Motors, Power and Electronic Systems Research Team, within Dyson’s Research, Design and Development (RDD) department; based in Malmesbury, Wiltshire, U.K.

Successful applicants for this role will be part of the team driving these products and others forward.

Market Overview

Home to our global Research, Design and Development centre and all of our Commercial functions, Dyson HQ is tucked away in countryside famous for the railway tunnels and bridges of Isambard Brunel, who revolutionised modern engineering. Our secluded location helps us to protect our ideas and stay independent-minded. Yet nearby are the fashionable cities of Bristol and Bath (where a young James Dyson invented cyclone technology). The building is the heartbeat of Dyson. Over 1,500 people, including James himself, spend their days strategizing, inventing technology and telling the Dyson story to the world. From 2016, our HQ will begin doubling its footprint with an ambitious new expansion.

Function Overview

Sometimes, making a technological leap forward means going back to the beginning. Since 1999, we’ve spent £150m building a motor from scratch – small, light and efficient, yet extremely powerful. Accountabilities

Applicants for this particular role must have directly applicable experience in electronics.


 The Electronics Technician role will involve:

  • Electronics assembly, test and fault-finding.

  • Electrical / electronic test rig design and build.

  • Advise on safe electrical practices.

  • Maintain stock of lab consumables.



Skills

Essential:

  • Experience of working in the field of electronics.

  • Ability to understand electronic / electrical schematics and engineering sketches.

  • PCB assembly of complex SMT and TH PCBs.

  • Basic PCB test and electrical system commissioning.

  • Fault diagnosis, documentation and repair.

  • Knowledge of test equipment (multi-meters, oscilloscopes, data logging etc).

  • Experience of building and working with mains voltage equipment (e.g. up to 240Vac, 350-450Vdc).

  • Knowledge of mains safety methods (double insulation, grounding etc).

  • Basic electronic design.

  • Basic electrical and mechanical design and fabrication.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Test rig design, construction and commissioning.

  • Experience of working in a laboratory environment.

     

    Desirable:

  • Basic programming (e.g. PLC programming).

  • Use of LabVIEW.

     

    Essential behavioural skills:

     

  • Excellent attention to detail and solutions orientated.

  • Displays drive and enthusiasm.

  • Ability to communicate appropriate, concise and accurate information in written and verbal format.

  • Ability to adapt, in line with core Dyson values.
