The Head of Development is a key member of the Group IT Delivery leadership team managing a team of in-house, contractor and 3rd party consultancy software developers onshore, near shore and offshore. They negotiate contracts, implement world class WOW, direct operations and develop in-house people to consistently produce robust and smart technology solutions that are fit for purpose.

Market Overview

Home to our global Research, Design and Development centre and all of our Commercial functions, Dyson HQ is tucked away in countryside famous for the railway tunnels and bridges of Isambard Brunel, who revolutionised modern engineering. Our secluded location helps us to protect our ideas and stay independent-minded. Yet nearby are the fashionable cities of Bristol and Bath (where a young James Dyson invented cyclone technology).
The building is the heartbeat of Dyson. Over 1,500 people, including James himself, spend their days strategizing, inventing technology and telling the Dyson story to the world. From 2016, our HQ will begin doubling its footprint with an ambitious new expansion.

Function Overview

The Digital team is driven by one ambition: to deliver an intuitive, premium interface on all digital devices, globally. In just 12 months, they took Dyson from seven eCommerce markets to 19, with more to come. They’re determined to do it better than anyone, providing speed and simplicity of purchase, and fingertip support to get the most out of our machines. As devices evolve, they’re partnering with industry experts to stay ahead; seeking new opportunities, leveraging data insight, relentlessly testing and refining. And often revolutionising.


Brings a structured approach to instil new wow and standardise development team operation on word class execution, including:
• Works with Head of Application Architecture, Head of Business Analysis and Head of Programme Management to streamline the design to development handover.
• Works with Head of QA to rapidly build and maintain a Behaviour Driven Development (BDD) process across delivery team.
• Setup and operate robust Knowledge Management
• They select creative 3rd party resource solutions and negotiate contracts that compliment in-house resources and enable factory operation.
• Assimilate BDD and automated testing processes and requirements.
• Standardise technical design and development peer review process.
• Operate in new agile delivery processes e.g. DSDM with Kanban and Scrum.


Key skills and experience required:
• A senior level software developer with strong and successful technical lead experience
• Experience of leading a team of developers.
• Advanced level (knowledge and experience) of programming languages and methodologies
• Experience of managing, directing and motivating staff to deliver projects with stretching scope and objectives.
• Highly numerate and literate, with the ability to produce top quality written specifications, strategy and implementation communication.
• Proactive and highly organised, with strong time management and planning skills.
• Experience at advising key stakeholders at senior and Executive board level.
• Ability to resolve unique and complex problems where facts may be insufficient or misleading.
• Experience with Agile software development methodologies is highly desired.
