Head of Direct Retail Store Operations

As the Head of Retail Store Operations – Direct, you will have full accountability for the launch and growth of the Dyson Direct Retail portfolio in the Americas.  Your responsibilities include directing all retail operations and staff, providing leadership and managing all departments and all purchases to maintain growth and profitability.  You will be tasked with achieving maximum operational effectiveness and efficiency and delivering a seamless and satisfying customer experience while maintaining our global vision for retail.

Market Overview

Three years ago 80% of Dyson’s business was full-sized vacuum cleaners. Today, its digital motor powered cordless vacuums, robots, Airblade hand dryers, bladeless fans, humidifiers, purifiers and heaters are powering its growth in 75 countries around the world. 2015 saw the addition of Jake Dyson Light to the portfolio, and in April 2016 Dyson took its biggest leap yet, revolutionizing the world of Beauty with the launch of the Dyson Supersonic™ Hairdryer.

Function Overview

Dyson is rapidly expanding; in its new and core categories, and across all of its global markets. The next four years are going to be Dyson’s biggest and busiest yet. We have huge growth plans for our Direct Retail portfolio which include Global Flagship, local Flagship and boutique stores where our teams will be responsible for creating a seamless and consistent Dyson Experience to capture the hearts and minds of our owners.  We are looking for creativity, a free thinker, and someone who knows how to use their retail space to educate and excite people about technology and our machines. 


New store development - own the journey from conception to opening, including;

  • Participate in the site selection process which includes developing store appraisals and capital budgets 
  • Participate in the design, construction and operations process to ensure each shop is delivered on time, within budget and is fully operational from the start
  • Establish best in class processes to ensure delight on every interaction
  • Develop and execute a strategy to hire and retain the best talent

On-going store operations – develop a model of operational excellence across our Direct Retail portfolio

  • Spend time on the ground with retail store teams and customers to understand and identify business critical issues in order to ensure the alignment of tactics and strategies
  • Translate the strategic goals into retail operational plans to achieve the required targeted growth in customer experience, sales and profit; identify and optimize promotional opportunities
  • Support Store Managers in making decisions on matters relating to the day to day retail operation within their defined work area, including the strategic planning of resources
  • Supervise the retail operations team and their management of on-going store operations issues (e.g. repairs, utilities, maintenance, POS rollouts/ changes, etc.); team also oversees support of local office facilities
  • Use open feedback mechanisms with the operations team and other departments to ensure integration of the Direct Retail strategy into the plans and objectives of all functional teams
  • Influence and support the retail element of the annual budget process ensuring understanding and buy in from the leadership team; Constantly review financial data and work with the Store Managers to provide realistic input into the annual budget
  • Ensure that the retail operation complies to all policies and procedures relating to Security, Health and Safety; influence any changes necessary to meet statutory requirements, ensuring minimum risk to staff members and the business
  • Maintain and constantly develop innovative and cost effective stock generation; monitor stock weekly to achieve bottom line sales budget against monthly targets
  • Partner with Head of IT regarding any required changes or upgrades to store POS or IT systems
  • Work with the HR Business Partner and team to ensure people management issues are satisfactorily resolved and relevant HR policies and procedures are adhered to
People leadership – Lead and develop a team of high performing team
  • Take a lead role in building a strong customer service and sales management culture with the operations team; spend time coaching Store Managers, identifying skills and opportunities for development; provide advice and guidance on staff issues when needed
  • Proactively manage and review the performance and progress of Store Managers and their staff, set objectives and targets; work with Training Manager to develop individual training plans for the team
Develop and own strategy to grow our Direct Retail portfolio
  • Generate ideas about future retail activities to ensure a cutting edge strategy
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of the market place, competitors and trends
Fulfill other duties as required
  • Pick up new activities that fall broadly in the purpose of the role
  • Fix things that you can see need fixing; Identify problems and find solutions


  • Minimum 5 -8 years’ experience in retail stores required
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience managing multiple retail stores required
  • Experience in strategic planning leading to operational excellence required
  • Expert people developer with an emphasis on leading vs. managing
  • Experience managing a
  • P & L required
  • Bachelor’s Degree strongly preferred or equivalent experience required
  • Ability to understand the Dyson brand and uphold its integrity
  • Must be a highly motivated, enthusiastic team player, driven by creating innovative customer experience

  • Must have a high level of customer focus
