Factory Head of Operations




This is an excellent opportunity to take overall responsibility for the management and capital development of Dyson’s component factory, reporting the Global Manufacturing Director. This is an opportunity to lead and be involved in a greenfield factory set up in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. The factory will be opened in 2018 and there are exciting challenges ahead to develop the facilities to be the best-in-class in operational excellence.

Market Overview

In 2000, Dyson moved production from Malmesbury to Malaysia to be closer to our supply chains and open up international growth. The small team of 10 has now grown to almost 1,200 – forming Dyson’s second biggest global hub. Located in the exhilarating industrial heart of Johor, it’s also home to RDD, IT, operations, finance, creative and HR. The RDD facility is central to our plans to launch 100 new machines in the next four years. To meet these ambitions, we recently expanded the site to 30,000m², with 50 advanced technology labs and 700 new engineers. In the Dyson world, there’s no more exciting place to be.

Function Overview

It’s one thing to solve a problem that’ll change technology forever. But turning that idea into a reality takes solving many more problems – and success is ultimately measured, not by the thinking, but by the product. Our Manufacturing department supports over 1,000 Dyson engineers worldwide turning ideas into groundbreaking technology. Involved early in the design, we identify materials, pre-empt production issues and find ways to build more efficiently. Yet robustly. From designing the machines, to the machines that build the machines, we’re helping to shape the future of technology.


This is what we need you to do …

Main Accountabilities (and supporting activities)

•Work closely with functional leaders within Global Dyson organization to set up the factory.

•Lead the factory towards a goal of achieving world class manufacturing standards and operational excellence.

•Deliver performance in line with overall business objectives - establish goals, objectives and guidelines covering all phases of plant operations and staff activities to maintain an efficient, functional, operational and profitable manufacturing facility.

•Implement progressive policies and procedures.

•Lead the organization through a period of significant organizational change and transformation and develop an effective relationship with preferred material and equipment suppliers.

•Provide visionary strategic leadership to create a ‘Quality Culture’ based on high achievement, accountability and continuous improvement.

•Align Manufacturing, HR, Finance and Engineering towards increasingly complex demands and operational objectives.

•Meet production schedules and produce a product in accordance with customer requirements while maintaining maximum production and minimum costs.

•Direct, guide and motivate immediate subordinates in attainment of projected goals and objectives to increase operational efficiency.

•Ensure that HS&E and quality standards are embedded within the culture. •Ensure compliance against CSR standards.

•Continually seek to improve workforce capabilities to ensure that exceptional customer service levels are achieved.

•Initiates and implements best in class manufacturing processes in areas such as equipment utilization, labor efficiency and material scrap.

•Continually seek to improve the process for product launches and deployment of new manufacturing processes.


This is what we require from you …

Desirable qualifications and experience:

•Greenfield experience in the space of manufacturing industry.

•Ideal candidates will have a degree in Engineering/Science and 10-15 years progressive manufacturing experience involving sintering, plating, brazing, processes and metal/ceramic materials.

•A successful track record of delivering significant manufacturing change agenda that embrace supply chain and production within a global, blue-chip organization, manufacturing industry.

•P&L experience required.

•The ability to lead and develop an organization through a period of significant cultural change and performance improvement towards achieving world class manufacturing standards.

•Outstanding communication skills.

•Experience of leading similar organizations within SEA and ability to demonstrate a track record of building relationships with key equipment suppliers and internal key stakeholders (R&D & Procurement).

•Practical experience of Lean Six Sigma methodology.

•Must demonstrate commercial and financial awareness.
