Project work with the MPS activities in terms of improvement and development.

Market Overview

Our Singapore story began in 2004 and today we have more than 1000 people working here. At the beginning of 2017 we opened our new, state of the art, Singapore Technology Centre in Science Park I, minutes from Singapore’s technology and start-up community. This new Technology Centre houses some of Dyson’s most advanced facilities including Robotics and Sensors laboratories and Smart Home, Connectivity & Mobile Applications laboratories as well as an Advanced Control Tower with the latest technology to develop its analytics-driven activities.

Not too far away is West Park, our flagship advanced motor manufacturing facility where we develop our autonomous robotic manufacturing capabilities – more than 300 robots assemble our Dyson Digital Motor (DDM) here. It is here that we develop our next generation of motor technology. 

Function Overview

Sometimes, making a technological leap forward means going back to the beginning. Since 1999, we’ve spent £150m building a motor from scratch – small, light and efficient, yet extremely powerful. Our motors are what enable our technology to be different – it’s why they’re protected by 20 to 30 patents. But the next generation demands new directions. Energy storage, robotics, nanotechnology and space-age materials. So our multi-disciplinary team, led by some of the world’s best power electronics engineers, knows that only the most pioneering thinking will do.         


Project 1


•To investigate the thermal behaviour of battery cells under different discharge power.
•To investigate the thermal characteristics of cell cage with different cage design and materials.


•Thermal characteristics of battery pack are critical for the safety of the Dyson machine.
•The thermal behaviours of battery pack is useful for us to realise an efficient thermal management system to the battery cells, thus prolong the runtime of the machine and improve the safety of battery pack.

Expected Outcomes:

•The thermal behaviour of battery cell. In this context, we will know which battery cell has a better thermal characteristic.
•The rise/fall of cell temperature can be observed.
•We can find out which cage material can provide the best thermal behaviour to the battery cells.
•We can find out which cage design can provide the best thermal behaviour to the battery cells.

Project 2


•The Intern would mainly be working with and acquiring skills in using Matlab tools to model and generate control software in a model based design framework. Familiarity and/or experience with Matlab tools will be required. Working knowledge with ‘C’ is preferred.

Expected Outcomes:

The project involves modelling controllers in Matlab using Simulink and Simscape, and using Matlab Coder to generate the C code that can be compiled to execute on the micro controller.

Project 3


•Robust motor design
•Project planning
•Evaluation test such as thermal mapping test, black box and etc.
•Design document such as design notes, FMEA, Failure analysis report, technical review documents and part approval, lessons learned.
•Manufacturing process


Expected Outcomes:

•Project work with the MPS daily activity in terms of improvement and development. A full knowledge landscape for motors development from design to manufacturing


  • Preferably an academic subject with Electronics and electrical / Power
  • Initiative, analytical skills Independence, Integrity and self driven with a strong focus on results.
  • Highly motivated person with good communication skills and able to work within a team.
  • Good behavior such as plan ahead, prioritizing the tasks and team spirit.
