Senior Aerodynamics Engineer




Through development and investment in new and exciting technologies Dyson is expanding into new and varied product categories. To facilitate the development of a new and exciting product opportunity we are broadening our expertise, growing our Engineering teams in both size and capability. We are currently recruiting a team of analytical specialists to work in the engineering team to support the generation and validation of design concepts to realise into robustly engineered production solutions. The Senior Aerodynamics Engineer role offers a unique opportunity to take a leading role in the development of a completely new and innovative program from the ground up. This presents a rare opportunity for pushing the boundaries in aerodynamic design. They will be responsible for delivering aerodynamic targets through concept design and analysis. Working with the design and engineering teams to evaluate concepts, run CFD simulations and produce high quality aerodynamic surface concept design solutions. This role requires integrated working with the project team and exposure to senior management to help guide development of the product. As a senior member of the team, the successful candidate will also be expected to use their experience to mentor and technically advise the junior team members, and to implement new ideas to help in the continuous improvement of the team’s capability.

Home to our global Research, Design and Development centre and all of our Commercial functions, Dyson HQ is tucked away in countryside famous for the railway tunnels and bridges of Isambard Brunel, who revolutionised modern engineering. Our secluded location helps us to protect our ideas and stay independent-minded. Yet nearby are the fashionable cities of Bristol and Bath (where a young James Dyson invented cyclone technology). The building is the heartbeat of Dyson. Over 1,500 people, including James himself, spend their days strategizing, inventing technology and telling the Dyson story to the world. From 2016, our HQ will begin doubling its footprint with an ambitious new expansion.

Function Overview

Our design engineering team is the idea factory of Dyson. It’s where we took the bag out of the vacuum. The blades out of a fan. And the heat out of hand dryers. With free-flowing curiosity and creativity, ideas are never in short supply. The key is deciding which ones could change the world and which should, for now, be shelved. This is done by the New Product Innovation team, who pass on the best ideas to New Product Development. Sketching, prototyping, testing, failing and refining follow. It can take months, even years. But those ideas that make it are big – the kind that transform markets.


• Take a leading role in delivery of aerodynamic targets.

• Develop new innovative aerodynamic concepts to provide ground breaking solutions to meet airflow targets.

• Set-up, run and analyse CFD simulations and present results to relevant teams.

• Produce high quality surface models of concepts for CFD evaluation

• Design of aerodynamic concept components for release for prototype models, manufacture and testing

• Improve and develop processes for efficiency, validity and fidelity.

• Organisation and running testing

• Produce report summaries and present findings to senior management


• An advanced knowledge and understanding of theoretical, experimental and numerical aerodynamics.

• Demonstrable industrial experience of the application of CFD or experimental techniques in aerodynamics to enable project success.

• Knowledge of surface mesh preparation.

• Strong experience in freeform parametric surfacing and solid modelling part design

• Excellent/Master’s degree in Aerodynamics, Fluid Dynamics, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent (other relevant engineering disciplines will be considered)

• Experience of aerodynamic testing,  including instrumentation, data acquisition and processing

• Experience of developing models for testing

• Experience in design for manufacture techniques and material selection to meet a product specification requirement would be a distinct advantage

• A willingness to learn and understand components and systems impacts on aerodynamics

• Ability to communicate appropriate, concise and accurate information, both in writing and verbally

• Proven ability to work autonomously with responsibility to deliver to tight project deadlines.

• Be able to multi-task and plan effectively when working with a variety of project teams in an often high-pressure

• Creative approach to data visualisation, representation and manipulation.
