Lead Legal Counsel

The Legal Department in Asia Pacific provides legal support to all businesses and functions in a geographical area which comprises the Asia and ANZ regions.  Headed by the General Counsel, Asia Pacific, who reports to the Group General Counsel, the Department takes a holistic approach to providing timely counsel and solutions to legal and compliance issues.  The role of Legal Counsel is now open for an experienced business-minded Legal Counsel to join the team.  The role will be located at the Company’s facility in Senai, Johor.

Market Overview

In 2000, Dyson moved production from Malmesbury to Malaysia to be closer to our supply chains and open up international growth. The small team of 10 has now grown to almost 1,200 – forming Dyson’s second biggest global hub. Located in the exhilarating industrial heart of Johor, it’s also home to RDD, IT, operations,  finance, creative and HR.

The RDD facility is central to our plans to launch 100 new machines in the next four years. To meet these ambitions, we recently expanded the site to 30,000m², with 50 advanced technology labs and 700 new engineers. In the Dyson world, there’s no more exciting place to be.

Function Overview

Dyson machines are built to last, as well as perform. To do this we invest heavily in performance and reliability testing, building our own machines to test our machines. 24 hours a day, seven days a week we put them through their paces. We analyse data and customer feedback, relentlessly improving product safety, reliability, usability and customer satisfaction. Each generation of Dyson technology must set the benchmark for the next. And with so many new categories on the way, our Global Quality & Reliability team will need to be more inventive than ever.


Reporting to the General Counsel, Asia Pacific, this role will include providing the following legal services:


(a) Supporting the day to day operations of the business including:

(i) Providing timely practical legal advice and support;

(ii) Identifying risks and working with the business to develop risk mitigation solutions;

(iii) Drafting and negotiating contracts with customers, third party manufacturers, suppliers and all other third parties;


(b) Supporting major tenders and contracts across the business;


(c) Providing legal and compliance training to the business and functional teams;


(d) Leading and handling until settlement all commercial disputes involving the business (including litigation and ADRs) and managing appointed external counsel (where necessary);


(e) Supporting HR on the handling and resolution of employee issues including conduct of disciplinary hearing and any subsequent industrial tribunal hearings;


(f) Updating relevant company policies and ensuring compliance (including supporting any relevant training and investigations);


(g) Supporting the corporate IP team in securing and enforcing IP rights, including negotiation of research and development agreements, including identifying and reporting potential breach of the company’s IP rights;


(h) Reviewing, creating and updating legal precedents, procedures and processes;


(i) Reviewing marketing claims in the regions to analyse risk of legal challenge in market including assessing test results to support claims; and handling advertising complaints for and against the business.


Experienced commercial lawyer who:


(a) Has at least 10 years post qualification experience of which at least 7 years should have been spent in-house in an MNC;


(b) Has a strong work ethic, positive attitude and the highest integrity;


(c) Has qualified and is not barred to practice law in Malaysia;


(d) Has a solid commercial law understanding and an ability to apply that knowledge in a practical way;


(e) Has a good awareness of the role of Legal in business decisions and has the ability to actively contribute in the taking of those decisions;


(f) Is a self-starter who is good at identifying issues and proactively remedying them;


(g) Can work with a minimum level of supervision in a fast paced environment;


(h) Has the ability to interact with all levels in the business up to and including director level;


(i) Is based in or prepared to relocate to Senai, Malaysia on a permanent basis;


(j) Where necessary, is willing to travel extensively in the region and to the UK.
