Product Safety Engineer

To maintain our strong and hard-earned brand name, the Dyson safety team works one step ahead of approvals and compliance requirements to ensure a Dyson product is safe in all situations. The position of Product Safety Engineer is independent to both Engineering and the wider Quality function. The focus is strictly on safety which is not related to other functions such as cost, usability or reliability. In addition to advice and feedback, the Product Safety Engineer assesses new designs as they develop and feeds back into the design process. While the design team own the design, the safety team along with the legal department is responsible for ensuring that this design does not compromise user safety.

New project introduction and early development is always in the UK. In these early stages, the Senior Safety Engineer based in UK is responsible for all safety decisions. At a point when the project is mature enough, it will be transferred to Malaysia where it will progress to production. The successful candidate, reporting to the Senior Safety Engineer in the UK, will become the focal point for all matters to do with safety. The Safety Engineer will need to build good relationships with the relevant local Design Managers and the Senior Safety Engineer’s in the UK.

It is envisaged that there will be an initial period of working in the UK in order to learn the risk based approach that the team take towards safety and to understand the processes involved throughout the product development process.

Market Overview

Our Singapore story began in 2004 and today we have more than 1000 people working here. At the beginning of 2017 we opened our new, state of the art, Singapore Technology Centre in Science Park I, minutes from Singapore’s technology and start-up community. This new Technology Centre houses some of Dyson’s most advanced facilities including Robotics and Sensors laboratories and Smart Home, Connectivity & Mobile Applications laboratories as well as an Advanced Control Tower with the latest technology to develop its analytics-driven activities.

Not too far away is Singapore's Advanced Manufacturing Centre, our flagship advanced motor manufacturing facility where we develop our autonomous robotic manufacturing capabilities – more than 300 robots assemble our Dyson Digital Motor (DDM) here. It is here that we develop our next generation of motor technology.

Function Overview

Dyson machines are built to last, as well as perform. To do this we invest heavily in performance and reliability testing, building our own machines to test our machines. 24 hours a day, seven days a week we put them through their paces. We analyse data and customer feedback, relentlessly improving product safety, reliability, usability and customer satisfaction. Each generation of Dyson technology must set the benchmark for the next. And with so many new categories on the way, our Global Quality & Reliability team will need to be more inventive than ever.

Where testing is being carried out to mitigate a safety concern, you will need to review both the test methods and the results to ensure that the information is both complete and relevant.

  • You will monitor all tests on the product to ensure safety is maintained, using established processes within Dyson.
  • You will audit all production and manufacturing processes for any product safety related concerns, ensuring these have been documented, reviewed and closed before start of production SOP.
  • Where concerns have been identified, you will be responsible for liaising with the UK Senior Safety Engineers as well as local teams to introduce appropriate quality controls. If a field investigation requires input from Malaysia, the Safety Engineer will be the point of contact and will help drive to gather the required information.
  • All product safety related concerns must be documented clearly as well as the mitigations of why they are acceptable, this will require extensive use of tools such as FMEA and Teamcenter™ and the completion of technical reports for each project.

  • Engineering degree with good experience and a broad understanding of mechanical and electrical engineering.
  • Experience of working with batteries and motors is desirable.
  • A self-starter able to manage their own day to day timetable and respond to changing priorities.
  • Possess the ability to work on multiple projects at the same time.
  • The successful candidate will need to be very strong willed in order to resist potential pressure to meet project deadlines and to maintain safety requirements.
  • Comfortable to talk to a wide range of people, from the production operators to Design Engineers and Managers to effectively resolve safety issues.
  • Able to travel as required.
