Dyson recognise that simply meeting approvals requirements does not necessarily make a product safe to use. We therefore go beyond the minimum requirements to ensure that our products are safe. The primary function of this role is to ensure that all potential safety concerns that have been identified are closed out prior to the start of production. The role will work closely with the safety team in the UK to monitor the design as it matures and  test results as they become available to ensure that the concerns are closed. As the design evolves and the manufacturing process is put into place the successful candidate will also need to continually review for new concerns and ensure that the evidence for closure is valid even though the final design position may still be under change.

The position sits within the safety team which in turn is part of the Global Quality team.

Market Overview

In 2000, Dyson moved production from Malmesbury to Malaysia to be closer to our supply chains and open up international growth. The small team of 10 has now grown to almost 1,200 – forming Dyson’s second biggest global hub. Located in the exhilarating industrial heart of Johor, it’s also home to RDD, IT, operations,  finance, creative and HR.

The RDD facility is central to our plans to launch 100 new machines in the next four years. To meet these ambitions, we recently expanded the site to 30,000m², with 50 advanced technology labs and 700 new engineers. In the Dyson world, there’s no more exciting place to be.

Function Overview

Dyson machines are built to last, as well as perform. To do this we invest heavily in performance and reliability testing, building our own machines to test our machines. 24 hours a day, seven days a week we put them through their paces. We analyse data and customer feedback, relentlessly improving product safety, reliability, usability and customer satisfaction. Each generation of Dyson technology must set the benchmark for the next. And with so many new categories on the way, our Global Quality & Reliability team will need to be more inventive than ever.


  • Review Dyson Test Method, FRACAS and Problem Reports for safety risk assessment. Where concerns have been identified, you will be responsible for liaising with the UK Senior Safety Engineers as well as local teams to introduce appropriate safety controls. If a field investigation requires input from Malaysia, the Safety Engineer will be the point of contact and will help drive to gather the required information.
  • Work closely with UK Senior Safety Engineer for peer review and with local teams on changing the ‘risk’ rating on Problem Reports if required
  • Where testing is being carried out to mitigate a safety concern, you will need to review both the test methods and the results to ensure that the information is both complete and relevant.
  • Maintain visibility tests that have been requested in order to assess line items in the Safety PFMEA.
  • Understand the test schedule drive for results.
  • Update the Senior Safety Engineer and the Safety PFMEA with changes to schedule.
  • Perform first-cut assessment of late-stage design changes intended to mitigate safety concerns, maintain awareness of implementation plan and chase implementation.
  • Support ad-hoc requests.
  • Stay close to the Design Team, remain aware of any changes to the product/project and escalate any pertinent information to the Senior Safety Engineer.


  • An engineer with good experience and a broad understanding of mechanical and electrical engineering.
  • Experience of working with batteries and motors is desirable.
  • Degree qualified or trained.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral at a technical and non-technical level.
  • Familiarity with risk assessment methodologies & test methodologies would be beneficial
  • Candidates must have the ability to work on multiple projects at the same time and highly adaptable to change with little notice.
  • The successful candidate will need to be very strong willed in order to resist potential pressure to meet project deadlines and to maintain safety requirements.
  • A self-starter able to manage their own day to day timetable and respond to changing priorities.
  • Comfortable to talk to a wide range of people, from the production operators to Design Engineers and Managers to effectively resolve safety issues.
