Description and Requirements

We are looking for a communications and public affairs professional to explain Dyson’s technology and ambitions to the media, politicians and our own people. They will from part of our Group Corporate Communications team, leading our strategy across South East Asia. The successful candidate will have outstanding relationships with top tier media across the region, an innate grasp of the political landscape, and experience of employee engagement all combined with the ability to tell inspiring stories, weaving together multiple narratives. They will have a leaderships style that inspires and motivates a geographically spread team.  

Market Overview:

Our Singapore story began in 2004 and today we have more than 1000 people working here. At the beginning of 2017 we opened our new, state of the art, Singapore Technology Centre in Science Park I, minutes from Singapore’s technology and start-up community. This new Technology Centre houses some of Dyson’s most advanced facilities including Robotics and Sensors laboratories and Smart Home, Connectivity & Mobile Applications laboratories as well as an Advanced Control Tower with the latest technology to develop its analytics-driven activities.

Not too far away is Singapore Advanced Manufacturing site, our flagship advanced motor manufacturing facility where we develop our autonomous robotic manufacturing capabilities – more than 300 robots assemble our Dyson Digital Motor (DDM) here. It is here that we develop our next generation of motor technology.

We are guardians for Dyson’s culture, philosophy, heritage and spirit channeling it into every piece of communication. We are constantly tuning our approach to suit the reality of a complex, rapidly growing international organisation. We are confident quick thinkers, challenging the norm and providing daily counsel to our senior leaders. We distill messages, determine appropriate channels, pull off events for thousands of people, and the odd magic trick.

Accountabilities:

Key accountabilities:
  • As a central member of the Group Communications Team you help to devise and implement an internal and external communications strategy for Dyson, with a focus on South East Asia. You will articulate our commitment to our core technology, our products, and our people while explaining the Dyson philosophy.  
  • Build external relationships which solidify Dyson’s reputation as a global technology company and as a growing contributor to the region. Ultimately we want to inspire the world’s most influential people to spread the word on our behalf and as part of this they will oversee a programme of proactive media activity and public affairs engagement.
  • Manage reputational issues and identify emerging threats and opportunities facing the organization, designing strategies to manage their impact including crisis management.  
  • Lead the internal communications programme for the SEA to inspire our people about Dyson’s technology, philosophy and performance. Develop and execute the internal communications calendar, content and platforms of communication – monthly company meetings, organisational announcements, intranet updates and leadership conferences. 
  • Provide daily counsel to our most senior leaders on all communications matters and organisational announcements.
  • Responsible for the voice of Dyson in SEA (spokespeople, press releases, online content, exhibition material), and ensure a consistently high level of execution across all channels.  
  • Manage the local comms teams (Singapore, Malaysia) to execute internal and external plans and organize the team work to work as effectively as possible.  
  • Manage regional budgets and people to ensure we have a high performing team.  

Skills:

What experience do you need?
  • The ideal candidate will have had experience advising and influencing at the most senior levels.
  • They will have detailed knowledge of South East Asian media.
  • Proven experience of advising and working with senior leaders.
  • Experience of employee engagement activites.
  • Experience of managing teams working across borders.
  • Senior level experience either in government organisations, in a multinational business, agency side, or media side. 
  • They will be excited by problems, and relish the opportunity to do things differently. 
In addition you will likely have: 
  • Strong project management, leadership skills and the ability to juggle multiple and shifting priorities. 
  • Commercially astute, able to align team objectives with those of the wider business. 
  • Experience in a senior management role focused on communications – either in-house, agency side or as a journalist. 
  • Ability to build and affect change - at both a people and process level.
  • Demonstrated skill and comfort in proactively building relationships with top tier reporters, editors, senior stakeholders within the organisation and teams; successfully positioning complex subject matter.
  • Evidence of experience in managing comprehensive strategic external and internal communications, media relations, political relationships, and the creation of ‘owned content’ to advance an organiszation’s mission and goals. 
  • Superior management skills; ability to influence and engage people up, down, and across the organisation.

  • The utmost discretion: tact and diplomacy in dealing with sensitive, complex and confidential issues and situations.
  • Cultural awareness and experience of the nuances of working in a European context.
  • Fastidious in organisation and with vision and purposes as well as an eye for the detail.
