Dyson has an opportunity for a Senior Design Engineer to join the Powertrain group within in its Electric Vehicle Engineering Team based at its Hullavington HQ.

We’ve begun work on a battery electric vehicle – that’s no secret. It has remained our ambition to solve the worldwide problem of air pollution for nearly 30 years. Now that we have the ability to bring all our technologies together into a single product, we’re able to solve this problem at the source. For now, it’s all about finding the right people to make it all happen for 2020.


  • Deliver design solutions that Stretch the boundaries of speed, power/torque density and efficiency in electric motor systems in a number of different applications 
  • Meet target specifications such as cost, size, weight and efficiency within the planned timeline 
  • Are reliable and fit for purpose to satisfy life requirements and to help achieve product guarantee period 
  • Comply with all relevant International Standards 
  • Aree innovative / novel with strong / high value IP for Dyson products 
  • Be responsible for delivering parts, assemblies and systems from concept to proof of principle. Lead other engineering colleagues as required to support this 
  • Demonstrate system level leadership to optimise product performance and solve complex engineering problems 
  • Have the ability to understand the overall product concept and contribute significantly to the design of the product through the use of expert knowledge of the latest technologies / methods in the industry. Meet target specifications such as cost, size, weight and efficiency within the planned timeline of each project that would make a great product 
  • Be a source of design engineering expertise to advise on design, development, material, manufacturing, validation and test issues. Use that expertise to coach team members and grow skills within the group 
  • Develop 3D CAD and engineering drawings for mechanical and electrical components and assemblies along with test rigs and assembly jigs. Review and approve work completed by others 
  • Deliver designs, concepts and detailed ideas for future motor parts and layouts for associated products that meet specification requirements and that are optimised for low cost manufacturing


  • Expert knowledge of 3D computer aided design (CAD) software packages, good working knowledge of analysis of mechanical system techniques, including Finite Element analysis (Ansys, APDL) for structural, fatigue, vibration, thermal and acoustics 
  • Knowledge of rotor dynamics analysis techniques and tools 
  • Experience in broad range of bearing technologies including but not limited to rolling element 
  • Good understanding of statistics and be able to use statistics as a tool on engineering decision making 
  • Strong technical expertise with breadth and depth covering materials (including composites), particularly for high stress and fatigue, rolling element bearings rotating up to and over 100,000 rpm, thermal properties and calculation / simulation methods / tools 
  • Appreciation of other engineering disciplines such aerodynamics, thermodynamics, CFD analysis and electrical, electronics and electromagnetic systems 
  • Ability to specify system components to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance specifications.
  • DFMEA, failure analysis/problem solving capability 
  • NX CAD experience is beneficial
