The design engineer will apply their skills and experience within the Floorcare Research team to help invent technologies that enhance the company’s technical advantage in future products. They will provide a lead role in the design of experimental/prototype rigs and test apparatus utilising a variety of techniques and materials. They will provide support to research projects from initial conception, through the various technology readiness levels, and finally into NPD projects. The successful candidate will also be expected to devise and implement new ideas to help in the continuous improvement of the team’s research capability. This role may also include line management of other engineers and/or technicians.

  • Help drive forward development to deliver product focused technology projects to the Dyson Blueprint. 
  • Generate innovative concepts for new technologies. • Identify potential research areas which would benefit from new technology development.
  • Design and build prototypes of chosen technologies. 
  • Apply innovative problem solving skills to support experimental development within the Research team. 
  • Take ownership of experimental design and lead the continuous development of new equipment and techniques to evaluate technologies. 
  • Lead the drive for increased efficiency within the Research team by proactively pursuing the development of new design and testing methodologies
  • Take an active, hands-on role to ensure that all engineering problems are resolved thoroughly. 
  • Be responsible for the approach, quality and accuracy of the Research design team’s work. 
  • Use established Dyson development processes, good engineering practice and discipline to deliver robust design solutions in agreed timeframe.
  • Challenge and develop Dyson engineering practices to continuously improve design quality. 
  • Champion great design to produce products that meet all performance and functional criteria. 
  • Liaise with development teams to ensure effective transfer of technology into future product range. 
  • Maintain all supporting documentation to ensure accurate hand over either to other teams within the UK and international  
  • Communicate between all teams within RDD and Global Operations to ensure effective and timely input. 
  • Day to day operational and line management of internal design team including performance management and people development. 
  • Participate in design reviews with Design Managers and Concept Design Director when required. 
  • Present concepts to James Dyson and the Exec. team, when required.


  • A degree in a relevant engineering or science discipline or equivalent. 
  • Extensive relevant experience of product design or engineering utilising CAD and PLM systems (Unigraphics / Siemens Teamcentre preferable). 
  • Previous experience of design in an experimental environment desirable. 
  • Technical and personal credibility to work effectively with other teams in RDD. 
  • Sound understanding and knowledge of basic physical principles. 
  • Previous experience with designing parts utilising rapid prototyping technologies such as SLA or SLS. 
  • Knowledge and understanding of injection moulding and manufacturing desirable. 
  • Previous experience of designing mechanical jigs and fixtures for experimental processes desirable. 
  • A creative and considered approach to problem solving, adhering to clear design processes. 
  • Creative and product focussed ability to generate numerous concepts for new technologies. 
  • An understanding of practical and methodical design development through prototyping and testing. 
  • Proven ability to work effectively both individually and in a team environment. 
  • Proven ability to communicate through 2 and 3 dimensional media, e.g. sketching, model making. 
  • Good organisational skills - able to plan ahead, prioritise tasks and co-ordinate with the work of others. 
  • Excellent communication, problem solving and analytical skills. 
  • Previous R&D design team management experience desirable.
