Senior Electronics Engineer
Dyson offers a unique opportunity for a talented and experienced Senior Electronics Engineer focusing on Battery Management Systems & Cell Performance in the Motors, Power and Electronic Systems Research Team, within Dyson’s Research, Design and Development (RDD) department; based in Malmesbury, Wiltshire, U.K.
Applicants for this particular role must have significant experience in the specific areas of battery management and cell / pack performance characterisation.
The senior electronics role will involve:
The development of battery management systems and assessment of alternative battery management solutions and topologies depending on the product requirements.
Strong awareness and input to the mechanical design of the battery pack to ensure the best overall compromise is achieved between measurement accuracy, thermal management, pack volume and pack safety.
Ensuring battery management systems meet regulatory and company requirements for safety.
Evaluation/design of cell balancing strategies with the emphasis on safety, cost, volume and mass of the solution.
Ensuring designs can comply with relevant EMC/EMI standards and modifying design where needed to ensure compliance.
Thermal management design of electronic systems (assisted by specialist thermal engineers).
Use of simulation and PCB design software to create prototypes.
Strong lab skills to build and test prototypes with minimal supervision.

Develop the concept, proving key technologies and demonstrating the system feasibility.
Prove the production intent solution and create suitable documentation prior to handover to the development teams.
Demonstrate designs are robust, cost effective and fit for purpose for a high volume manufacture environment, through detailed laboratory testing, simulation and analysis.
Assist in the personal development of junior team members.
Education and experience:
Minimum BEng/MEng degree in Electronic Engineering or other relevant discipline with a demonstrable level of industrial experience in a relevant industry.
Minimum technical knowledge:
Design of electronics for complete battery management systems
Design of battery management systems, especially for Lithium-Ion technology.
Knowledge of thermal design for a broad range of applications– i.e. surface mount and through hole devices, heatsinking, insulating/mounting, airflow.
Good understanding of how to conduct high currents in cables, connectors and PCBs whilst minimising inductance.
Design techniques to meet EMC requirements.
Excellent knowledge of the specification, selection and testing of fuses.
Schematic capture using Mentor Graphics or other main stream tools.
Use of SPICE based simulation tools such as Simetrix
Design calculation tools such as Mathcad, Matlab, Excel
Circuit simulation and design tolerance analysis
Good quality engineering process understanding and appreciation
Design for high volume manufacture
PCB layout – size/cost minimisation while achieving layouts for inherently good EMC compliance and thermal design
Control circuit design:
Excellent understanding of techniques for accurately monitoring mV signals in V of noise.
Excellent knowledge of non-ideal behaviour in analogue to digital converters, op-amps, comparators, voltage references etc. including ways to manage these non-ideal characteristics.
Working with Cell electrochemists and Cell application engineers, actively collaborate in the specification and implementation of both cell and pack level electrical, thermal and mechanical characterisation.
Desirable technical knowledge:
Robust design including FMEA techniques.
Battery charging using wireless power transfer.
Essential practical skills:
Ability to build, test and modify prototypes accurately, safely and with minimal supervision.
Excellent understanding of the dangers inherent in cells and batteries.
Essential behavioural skills:
The ability to take a leadership position within a project with little direction.
Good analytical ability and attention to detail.
Ability to communicate appropriate, concise and accurate information in written and verbal format.
