Senior IoT Android Software Engineer (Java, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth LE)

The Senior Android Developer will be part of the growing Connectivity Research team at Dyson.

Market Overview

In May 2016 Dyson launched the second of its connected products, the Dyson Pure Cool Link, which joins our existing 360 Eye robot vacuum cleaner with it’s companion eco-system, Dyson Link. Dyson Link is our IOT solutions to enable Dyson products to work in a connected environment. It includes the key components required to create a connected product, from mobile apps, web/CRM integrations and cloud services (provisioning, asset management, message routing, product/app analytics, persistence and scaling).

Function Overview

The Connectivity Research Team are responsible for ensuring the next generation of connected products and technologies are properly explored, tested and refined in readiness to transition to the team responsible for producing our IoT solutions. This includes ensuring we investigate and utilise the right technologies, techniques, services and security. Additionally, Dyson products will need to operate in a wider connected environment requiring interoperability to be explored and evolved.


You will be working in a multi-disciplinary team including mobile and cloud Developers, app and product UX/UI designers and electronics and mechanical engineers. You will often be collaborating with experts from different areas of RDD (Research, Design & Development), designing how connectivity is woven deeply into our products. You must be independent and methodical with excellent problem solving skillls. It is essential to be knowledgeable about the latest trends in connectivity and mobile technology and comfortable with rapidly picking up new technologies. A thirst to overcome problems and limitations in order to reach our vision is absolutely essential.

  • Researching underlying connectivity protocols and interoperability frameworks
  • Architecting connectivity solutions
  • Designing and validating new features, often with prototype hardware
  • Working closely with the UI/UX group to develop the next generation standards for Dyson Link
  • Assist in mentoring other members of the team
  • Communicating and documenting your findings and solutions
  • Help evolve our research processes
  • Working with 3rd party organisations and bodies to understand and enhance standards


  • BSc/MSc degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related subject or equivalent experience
  • Commercial experience developing native Android (Java, C++, Android Studio)
  • Broad knowledge of the general mobile landscape, architectures, trends and emerging technologies
  • Experience of working with connectivity technologies – REST, Cloud services, Bluetooth
  • Capable of rapidly developing robust research prototypes
  • Methodical and analytical approach to problem solving
  • Experience of working closely with UI/UX design teams with an understanding of Google’s design principles and interface guidelines
  • Track record of documenting and communicating ideas
  • Experience deploying Apps and using analytics to understand usage
  • Understanding and experience of secure networking is desirable
