You will oversee the research and product development activities of a team of noise and vibration engineers working within the wider Aeroacoustic Research team.

Accountabilities

You will apply a deep understanding of the physics of acoustics and a pragmatic engineering approach to support your direct line reports and product development teams in implementing effective noise control measures as well as in other applications of acoustics.

You will use analytical and numerical modelling alongside experimental results to understand noise generation and product performance at a system level. You will apply your skills and experience to extend our technology portfolio through targeted research on internal programmes and with external university partners.

You will communicate results around the business and drive research projects from initial conception through to maturity using the technology readiness level framework.

  • Support the research and development activities of a small team of noise and vibration engineers.
  • Work on the acoustic performance of our class leading products from the initial concept to production.
  • Invent novel technologies to enable new features, improved performance and reduced noise in our next generation of products.
  • Identify opportunities to apply acoustics in areas outside noise control, for example, electro-acoustics, signal processing or sensing.
  • Interrogate the acoustics of products using analytical and numerical modelling techniques.
  • Design and conduct experiments to validate analytic work and prove system performance.
  • Liaise with other teams to ensure best practice for noise and vibration and effective transfer of new technologies into product.
  • Collaborate with external partners and universities to accelerate our knowledge and understanding in a variety of technical areas.
  • Analyse results, write reports and conduct presentations to other engineers across the business including senior managers, company directors and James Dyson.

Skills

  • Degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or equivalent.
  • Demonstrable experience in acoustics, wave physics or signal processing.
  • The ability to manage a small team while working as part of a larger collaboration.
  • Programming and scientific computing experience, e.g. MATLAB, Python, Mathematica.
  • Experience of finite element analysis packages (e.g. COMSOL, Ansys) and measurement systems (e.g. B&K Pulse, Labview) desirable but not essential.
  • A highly driven individual who strives for accurate results in every aspect of your work.
  • Clear logical thinker with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Proven structured approach to creative problem solving
  • Ability to communicate appropriate, concise and accurate information in written and verbal format.
