Market Overview

In 2000, Dyson moved production from Malmesbury to Malaysia to be closer to our supply chains and open up international growth. The small team of 10 has now grown to almost 1,200 – forming Dyson’s second biggest global hub. Located in the exhilarating industrial heart of Johor, it’s also home to RDD, IT, operations,  finance, creative and HR.

The RDD facility is central to our plans to launch 100 new machines in the next four years. To meet these ambitions, we recently expanded the site to 30,000m², with 50 advanced technology labs and 700 new engineers. In the Dyson world, there’s no more exciting place to be.

Function Overview

Reporting to the PCB DfX Technical lead, the successful candidate will become part of a busy global ECAD team working with Mechanical and Electronics engineers within Research Design and Development (RDD), driving embedded DfX (Design for ‘X’, e.g. DFM, DFF) and BiC principles into our design process, tools and approach; enabling efficient & effective design, doing more with less.

The scope of the team is broad; encompassing technical input from early product concept reviews to post-production support, building, developing guidelines, and driving adoption. Support to both Manufacturing and Quality teams are also a part of the activity, as well as supporting/driving the on-going cost save activity, and building technology roadmaps.


The role is demanding, and the ideal candidate will either be an experienced PCB DfX Engineer or a PCB designer, with a proven track record creating robust, reliable BiC designs and solutions. You must also be able to self-manage and motivate, managing your own time in order to undertake a variety of PCB DfX related activities.  The ideal candidate will be able to drive adoption of new design principles, alternate thinking, and change. Dyson engineers are many things; you must be able to provide solutions where you identify problems, be pro-active, and become a role model plus technical resource for others. The ideal candidate must be innovative, enjoy being challenged, adapt to change, function within a team, but also work independently as required.

  • Leading

    • Support technical PCB design reviews within RDD from concept/development to production

    • Promote embedded BiC working practices & process adherence as part of a global team approach

    • Provide coaching and technical advice to global PCB design team in relation to DfX and BiC principles

    • Provide technical representation from Dyson to our PCB and PCBA suppliers.

    • Potential for line management tasks

  • PCB engineering

    • Liaise with project teams to help generate a specification for each design.

    • Help identify the best PCB technologies and practices to suit the requirements of each project

    • Identify, and take initiative to provide solutions to PCB engineering problems through a methodical and structured approach, and provide technical guidance to others.

    • Challenge & develop Dyson engineering practices to continuously improve technologies/design/product quality

    • Support technology roadmap objectives

    • Consistently apply, and drive adoption of BiC (best-in-class) principles

    • Provide PCB technical support to reviews and meetings as required

    • Proactive support to CAD optimisation team

  • Design

    • Leadership in cost avoidance and cost save practices

Design validation, peer checking and design reviewing.



  • HNC Engineering or equivalent as a minimum

  • BEng degree in Electronic Engineering, or other relevant discipline, with a demonstrable level of industrial experience in a relevant industry, desirable

Skills & experience.

  • Key PCB Design/Engineering capabilities:

    • Demonstrable knowledge of manufacturing processes and equipment capability

    • Direct DfX experience within a PCB Fabrication or PCB Assembly Manufacturer

    • Proven track record in regard to achieving PCB quality design principles and TTM driven goals

    • Demonstrable proactive involvement within cost reduction and lean engineering activities

    • Knowledge of Multi-layer, HDI, RF and Flex technologies

  • Desirable PCB Design/Engineering capabilities:

    • Knowledge of PCB design (including low cost to Hi-tech complexity)

    • Design for high volume, applying an embedded DFM approach

    • Design for EMC compliance an advantage

    • Appreciation for mechanical engineering in product design

  • CAD Experience

    • Demonstrable a level of CAD experience. Ideally, (but not essential):

      • Mentor Graphics Xpedition Enterprise tools

      • Valor tools

  • General

    • Understanding of electronics product design in terms of process and quality

    • Ability to drive PCB design quality within a multi-functional project team

    • Working knowledge of relevant IPC standards

    • PC and office applications literate
