Dyson offers a unique opportunity for a talented and experienced Senior Power Electronics Engineer in the Technical Research Team, within Dyson’s Research, Design and Development (RDD) department; based in Malmesbury, Wiltshire, U.K.

The technical research team aims to exploit this knowledge to design state-of-the-art products allowing us to differentiate our products from the competition and be ahead of the times. Dyson is expanding into several new and exciting product categories and is positioning itself as a technology company, confirmed by the release of the 360 Eye robotic vacuum cleaner and recent investments in Sakti3 solid state battery technology. Successful applicants for this role will be part of the team driving these products and others forward.

Accountabilities

Applicants for this particular role must have significant experience in the power electronics field. The senior power electronics role will involve:

• Working remotely with the different product teams to gain an in depth product understanding, while using their expert knowledge of the latest technologies to create innovative power electronics systems and solutions

• Be creative to convert expert knowledge in the field into tangible, highly novel end products with strong performance improvements and intellectual property benefits

• The development of power converters for a variety of applications, including battery charging • The design of motor inverters and control schemes for brushless DC, servo and stepper motors

• Ensuring designs can comply with relevant EMC/EMI standards and modifying designs where needed to ensure this is the case

• Thermal management design of power electronics systems Whilst the Power Electronics team is responsible for supporting products at initial design stages, a key focus for any successful applicant will be to research into new technology and look at ways of incorporating this into future products.

As a senior employee, a successful applicant will be expected to:

• Understand the requirements and expectations of academic and industrial/commercial world

• Developing concepts, proving key technologies and demonstrating system feasibility

• Initiating the production intent solution and developing suitable documentation prior to handover to the development teams

• Demonstrate designs are robust, cost effective and fit for purpose for a high volume manufacture environment, through detailed laboratory testing, simulation and analysis

• Research and develop novel power electronics topologies

Skills

Education and experience:

• Minimum BEng/MEng degree in Electronic Engineering or other relevant discipline with a demonstrable level of industrial experience in a relevant industry alternatively graduated from a relevant post-doctoral degree with a mix of high level practical as well as theoretical knowledge.

Minimum technical knowledge:

• Power Electronics:

o Excellent general knowledge of power electronic devices, including silicon based IGBTs and MOSFETs through to emerging GaN based technologies

o Understanding of device characteristics and issues with switching behaviour in real circuits, as well as power switch driver design o Knowledge and experience of using, or designing, power hybrid modules and power SoC modules (e.g. drivers and power switches in one device)

o SMPS and linear regulator power supply design for digital and analogue electronic systems o Deep understanding of a variety of SMPS topologies and operating modes. Knowledge of buck, boost and buck-boost converters is essential

o Experience in motor inverter design and motor control, particularly brushless DC motors, servo and stepper motors

o Design of battery management systems, especially for Lithium-Ion technology

o Device selection - Interpretation of datasheets and knowledge of design methods to confidently select the lowest cost devices while achieving reliability targets o Thermal design – Surface mount and through hole devices, heatsinking, insulating/mounting, airflow

  o Design of power electronics for both low voltage and mains voltage systems.

• Design Techniques

o Circuit simulation and design tolerance analysis

o Robust design including FMEA techniques

o Good quality engineering process understanding and appreciation

o Design for high volume manufacture o Low voltage and mains voltage equipment

Essential behavioural skills:

• The ability to take a leadership position within a project with little direction • Good analytical ability and attention to detail

• Ability to communicate appropriate, concise and accurate information in written and verbal format

• Ability to adapt or generate imaginative and innovative ideas, in line with core Dyson values

• Be highly self-motivated and self-reliant in order to work remotely, away from the main (Malmesbury) office
