Home to our global Research, Design and Development centre and all of our Commercial functions, Dyson HQ is tucked away in countryside famous for the railway tunnels and bridges of Isambard Brunel, who revolutionised modern engineering. Our secluded location helps us to protect our ideas and stay independent-minded. Yet nearby are the fashionable cities of Bristol and Bath (where a young James Dyson invented cyclone technology). The building is the heartbeat of Dyson. Nearly 3,000 people, including James himself, spend their days strategising, inventing technology and telling the Dyson story to the world. In 2017, our HQ will double its footprint with an ambitious new expansion.

Dyson seeks applicants who have first-hand experience of robotics and a portfolio of robotics projects. Applicants are not required to have existing experience with locomotion, manipulation or cognition. We seek people with initiative, creativity, and the ability to learn fast, along with a cross-section of skills that will make a contribution to the company.

Our job descriptions are intended to be examples of sets of skills that would be useful, rather than narrow definitions. As a growing team working at the forefront of robotics research, candidates for all job openings are expected to:

  • Be good communicators capable of explaining complex concepts clearly and succinctly.
  • Work in a tightly coupled, cross-functional and multi-cultural team environment.
  • Work autonomously under limited supervision to achieve big-picture goals.


  • PhD (or equivalent industrial experience) in control algorithms applied to practical problems relevant to robotic motion planning, kinematics, probabilistic control or real-time physical platforms
  • Strong software implementation skills
  • Motion control
  • Trajectory Optimisation
  • Model Predictive Control
  • Nonlinear Optimisation


  • Strong C++ and Python experience
  • Knowledge of existing robotics and control software frameworks (e.g. ROS, MoveIt)
  • Understanding of systems design and integration.
