The technical research team aims to exploit this knowledge to design state-of-the-art products allowing us to differentiate our products from the competition and be ahead of the times. Dyson is expanding into several new and exciting product categories and is positioning itself as a technology company, confirmed by the release of the 360 Eye robotic vacuum cleaner and recent investments in Sakti3 solid state battery technology. Successful applicants for this role will be part of the team driving these products and others forward.

Market Overview

Home to our global Research, Design and Development centre and all of our Commercial functions, Dyson HQ is tucked away in countryside famous for the railway tunnels and bridges of Isambard Brunel, who revolutionised modern engineering. Our secluded location helps us to protect our ideas and stay independent-minded. Yet nearby are the fashionable cities of Bristol and Bath (where a young James Dyson invented cyclone technology). The building is the heartbeat of Dyson. Over 1,500 people, including James himself, spend their days strategizing, inventing technology and telling the Dyson story to the world. From 2016, our HQ will begin doubling its footprint with an ambitious new expansion.

Function Overview

Sometimes, making a technological leap forward means going back to the beginning. Since 1999, we’ve spent £150m building a motor from scratch – small, light and efficient, yet extremely powerful. Our motors are what enable our technology to be different – it’s why they’re protected by 20 to 30 patents. But the next generation demands new directions. Energy storage, robotics, nanotechnology and space-age materials. So our multi-disciplinary team, led by some of the world’s best power electronics engineers, knows that only the most pioneering thinking will do. That’s the Dyson way.


The power electronics team is responsible for a number of disciplines, including: Motor Drive Systems:

  • Design of motor inverter hardware for: High-speed (>100,000rpm) single phase motor systems
  • Three phase motor systems Servo and stepper motor drives Power Supply Design
  • Switch mode and linear regulator power supplies for low voltage analogue and digital circuitry Battery Management Systems
  • Design of Lithium-Ion battery management systems for a variety of products and cell pack structures
  • Design of cell balancing hardware
  • Development of new battery management system for emerging cell technologies (e.g. Sakti3 solid state battery technology)

Key responsibilities:

  • Applicants for this particular role must have significant experience in the aforementioned power electronics areas. The Technology Leader role will primarily involve:
  • Leading the power electronics team and interaction with senior management
  • Leading a variety of concurrently running projects
  • Direct involvement in working with the different product teams to gain an in depth product understanding, while using their expert knowledge of the latest technologies to create innovative power electronics systems and solutions
  • The development of battery management systems and assessment of alternative battery management solutions and topologies depending on the product requirements
  • The design of motor inverters and control for brushless DC, servo and stepper motors o Ensuring designs can comply with relevant EMC/EMI standards and modifying design where needed to ensure this is the case
  • Thermal management design of power electronics systems
  • Ensuring battery management systems meet regulatory and company requirements for safety
  • Design of both mains and battery powered electronics to meet global requirements.
  • Whilst the Power Electronics team is responsible for supporting products at initial design stages, a key focus for any successful applicant will be to research into new technology and look at ways of incorporating this into future products.

As a Technology Leader, a successful applicant will be expected to:

  • Take technical responsibility for the power electronics team covering multiple projects
  • Ensure the team develops the concept, proves key technologies and demonstrates the system feasibility
  • Initiate the production intent solution and developing suitable documentation prior to handover to the development teams
  • Demonstrate designs are robust, cost effective and fit for purpose for a high volume manufacture environment, through detailed laboratory testing, simulation and analysis
  • Assist in the personal development of the team and undertake annual appraisals of the power electronics team members
  • Review and critique circuit design, analysis and documentation for electronics hardware.


Education and experience:

  • Minimum BEng/MEng degree in Electronic Engineering or other relevant discipline with a demonstrable level of industrial experience in a relevant industry. Minimum technical knowledge:
  • Power Electronics: o Excellent general knowledge of power electronic devices, including silicon based IGBTs and MOSFETs through to emerging GaN based technologies
  • Battery application experience specifically with regard to safety systems, cell balancing and determining system parameters (such as product runtimes)
  • Understanding of device characteristics and issues with switching behaviour in real circuits as well as power switch driver design
  • Knowledge and experience of using, or designing, power hybrid modules and power SoC modules (e.g. drivers and power stiches in one device)
  • SMPS and linear regulator power supply design for digital and analogue electronic systems
  • Experience in motor inverter design and motor control, particularly brushless DC motors, servo and stepper motors o Design of battery management systems, especially for Lithium-Ion technology
  • Device selection - Interpretation of datasheets and knowledge of design methods to confidently select the lowest cost devices while achieving reliability targets
  • Thermal design – Surface mount and through hole devices, heatsinking, insulating/mounting, airflow
  • Design of power electronics for both low voltage and mains voltage systems

Design Tools:

  • Schematic capture using Altium Designer, Mentor Graphics or other main stream tools
  • Use of SPICE based simulation tools such as Simetrix and LTspice
  • Flowtherm or similar thermal modelling packages
  • Design calculation tools such as Mathcad, Matlab, Excel

Design Techniques:

  • Circuit simulation and design tolerance analysis
  • Robust design including FMEA techniques
  • Good quality engineering process understanding and appreciation o Design for high volume manufacture
  • Low voltage and mains voltage equipment
  • PCB layout – size/cost minimisation while achieving layouts for inherently good EMC compliance and thermal design
  • Experience of analogue circuit design (e.g. signal amplification and conditioning for feedback signals from power electronic hardware to microcontrollers for example) is desirable.
