Test Rig Design Engineer

Dyson is forever innovating and developing new and exciting products. Reporting to the Test Rig Design & Build Team Leader at RDD, the successful candidate will play an integral part in ensuring the new technologies and products are robust to dealing with real world environments and customer use whilst maintaining performance requirements.

Market Overview

Home to our global Research, Design and Development centre and all of our Commercial functions, Dyson HQ is tucked away in countryside famous for the railway tunnels and bridges of Isambard Brunel, who revolutionised modern engineering. Our secluded location helps us to protect our ideas and stay independent-minded. Yet nearby are the fashionable cities of Bristol and Bath (where a young James Dyson invented cyclone technology). The building is the heartbeat of Dyson. Over 1,500 people, including James himself, spend their days strategizing, inventing technology and telling the Dyson story to the world. From 2016, our HQ will begin doubling its footprint with an ambitious new expansion.

Function Overview

It takes real ingenuity to find new ways of doing things. Smarter technologies. Lighter, stronger materials. And quieter, cleaner power systems. Our Research & Science teams – scientists, mechanical engineers and specialists across each product category – are the experimenters and risk-takers behind Dyson problem-solving. Whether it’s in-house development, sourcing outside technology partners, or driving collaboration with partner universities, they lead the way in finding the next generation of Dyson technology. Which is why any one of them can find themselves presenting to James Dyson himself.

  • Program test rig controllers, specifically with the use of LabVIEW.
  • Commission test rigs as part of a cross-functional team.
  • Provide a test rig advisory service to other RDD teams.
  • Contribute to the team’s continuous improvement activities.

  • Good knowledge of and experience with control and instrumentation electronics, including; PLC controllers and National Instruments hardware.
  • Some experience developing control and measurement software in LabVIEW.
  • Experience designing and using test equipment, integrating mechanical, pneumatic, electrical and electronic components/systems in real-world applications.
  • Good analytical and problem solving ability.
  • A good understanding of electrical best practice, specifically with power control circuits.
  • Ability to work effectively both individually and as part of a team, delivering high quality output to strict timelines.
  • Degree qualified (or equivalent) in a relevant engineering or science discipline.
  • Good organisational skills – able to plan ahead, prioritise tasks and co-ordinate with the work of others.
  • Good communication skills – able to work with validation engineers, build and test technicians to seek or give information, clarification and direction.
